The Vespa, Piaggio's iconic scooter, is the focal point of a Supreme Court ruling issued following an appeal brought by Chinese companies Zhejiang Zhongneng Industry Group Co. Ltd and Taizhou Zhongneng Import and Export Co. Ltd, which are active in the manufacturing and marketing of motorbikes.
 
The ruling, among other things, reaffirmed the existence of the copyright on the shape of the "Vespa" held by Piaggio but denied the recognition of the cumulative protection between shape trademark and copyright.
