On 15 February 2023, Italy was referred to the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) by the European Commission, due to its failure to transpose and notify national measures implementing Directive (EU) 2019/1937 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 23 October 2019 on the protection of persons who report breaches of Union law by the deadline (i.e., 17 December 2021).
